What are Phrasal Verbs?

Extremely popular in spoken English, phrasal verbs can be confusing sometimes due to their definitions that are not always easily guessed.

Phrasal Verbs are verbs followed by what is called a ‘particle‘. This ‘particle’ is either a preposition or an adverb, or possibly one of each. This particle can be a preposition or an adverb that creates a meaning different from the original verb. For example, “take off” means to remove, but it also means to depart or leave.

In other words, a phrasal verb combines a regular and ordinary verb with an adverb or a preposition to form a completely new verbal phrase. A phrasal verb’s meaning is often unrelated to the meanings of the components that form it; hence, consider a phrasal verb to be an altogether new and independent term.

All students of English need a basic understanding of the most common phrasal verbs and how to use them in everyday life. They are important and sometimes there is no other way to say them but to use a phrasal verb.

Separable and non-separable phrasal verbs

Phrasal verbs can be either separable or non-separable.

Separable phrasal verbs are those in which the particle can come before or after the verb’s object. In the sentence “I’m going to pick up my sister from the airport,” for example, the phrasal verb “pick up” is separable since the particle “up” can come before or after the object “my sister.”

Non-separable phrasal verbs, on the other hand, are those in which the particle must always follow immediately after the verb and cannot be detached from it by the object. The particle “into,” for example, cannot be separated from the verb “ran” by the object “room” in the sentence “She rushed into the room.” The phrasal word in this situation is “run into.”

It is vital to remember that the separability of a phrasal verb might vary depending on the context. Some phrasal verbs can be separated in some circumstances but not others. The phrasal verb “turn off,” for example, is normally non-separable, as in “I turned off the lights,” but it can be separable in specific instances, such as “I switched off the lights in the bedroom.”

Unfortunately, no rule will help you to look at a phrasal verb and always know whether it is separable or non-separable.

Separable

Separable phrasal verbs can be separated by their object.

Examples:

He put a jacket on.
I had pick them up from the airport last night.
Please give the keys back to me.

Non-separable

Non-separable phrasal verbs cannot be separated by their object

Examples:

The car ran into a tree.
You didn’t fall for that nonsense, right?
The party came off well.

How to conjugate a phrasal verb

To conjugate, when a phrasal verb is employed as the main verb in a phrase, the verb part is conjugated while the other words remain unchanged. Simply use the verb in the form you would use if it were alone.

The conjugation of a phrasal verb is determined by the verb’s tense and subject. In general, phrasal verb conjugation follows the same rules as any other verb in English. Here are some examples of phrasal verb conjugation in different tenses:

Examples:

Simple Past: He turned off the computer and went to bed.
Past continuous: They were turning off the lights when I walked in.

Simple Present: I turn off the TV every night before bed.
Present continuous: She is turning off the lights as we speak.

Simple Future: I will turn off the lights outside before I go to bed.
Future continuous: I will be putting on my sneakers by the time he arrives for our walk.

To stop or interrupt.

What are Transition Words and Linking Words?

Generally speaking Transition Words and Linking Words describe the relationship between two statements, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs.These statements can be dependent or independent.

Examples:

Parts of Speech in the English Language

In order to build your basic grammar foundation it is very important to become familiar with the name of each part of speech and to expand your knowledge about each one of them.

A part of speech is a category of words that have similar properties. Many English words can belong to more than one part of speech.

There are 8 Parts of Speech

Words are the building blocks of your communications, take some time to read and understand how they are classified and how they are applicable in your daily life.

Nouns

A noun is a word that functions to name a person, place, thing, or idea. Please note that when you are studying the Parts of Speech in English, articles are usually under nouns because they often refer to nouns.

Nouns are divided in 6 groups, but one noun can belong to more than one group:

They can also be classified as masculine, feminine or neuter. Singular or plural. Mass nouns (meat, sugar and cheese), countable nouns (dogs, chair, tables and cars) and uncountable nouns (gold, information work and furniture).

Pronouns

A pronoun substitutes a noun. A pronoun is a word that you use to refer to someone or something when you do not need to use a noun or when it was mentioned before.

The pronoun takes the place of a common noun or a proper noun and it is also used to avoid repetition.

There are different kinds of pronouns:

Indefinite Pronouns	Everyone Anyone Someone Anybody Nobody	They do not refer directly to any other word. Most indefinite pronouns express the idea of quantity.	Everyone is home. Nobody wants to go to show.

Adjectives

Adjectives describe and modify nouns and pronouns. They give you more information about people, places and things.

Verbs

Verbs are the most fundamental part of speech. They can describe actions, senses and even act as helpers.

Types of Verbs:

Adverbs act as modifiers. They add to or modify the meaning of verbs.

Adverbs can be classified in five groups:

Prepositions

Prepositions are words that express a connection between other words, they show a relationship in a sentence. They have only one form, they don’t take a plural, a possessive, an inflection, or any other thing.

Prepositions can express:

Conjunctions

Conjunctions are words used to link words, phrases or independent clauses.They can also be used to contrast or compare parts of a sentence or express subordinative clause.

Correlative Conjunctions	To contrast or compare equal parts of a sentence.	both / and not only / but also either / or neither / nor
Subordinating Conjunctions	To express a subordinative clause.	although even if unless

Although Conjunctions are not forbidden to be used at the beginning of a sentence, you should be very carefully not to overdo that when you are writing as it signals a very poor way to express your ideas.

Interjections

Interjections express emotion or surprise. They are often signaled by an exclamation mark or a comma.

Use	Examples
To express mood emotions and feelings. Like surprise, pleasure, disappointment or pain.	Wow! That is great news. What! Why you never told me that? Ouch! That hurts.
To express YES or NO.	Yes! I knew you were going to pass the test. Nope! That is not it.
To interrupt a thought or a conversation.	Well, I didn’t know you would feel that way. I’m, uh, so embarrassed to tell you that.
