Pronouns
What is a pronoun?
A pronoun is a substitute for a noun or a noun phrase. Here we are going to study Pronouns.
Pronouns are used in place of a specific noun mentioned earlier in a sentence, in other words, they replace nouns.
We use a pronoun so that we don’t have to keep saying that specific noun.
Examples of Pronouns:
- Study these examples:I have a house. It is my house.
- The house is mine. I built it myself.
- Come with me, let’s look inside.
- Mary has a house too. Her house is red, but mine is blue.
- She has a beautiful house. The house is hers.
- John lives alone. He lives by himself.
- We have a car. It is our car. The car is ours.
- I was talked with Ana last night. I told her that we are moving next week.
More examples:
- He took a test last week. His score was very high.
- I am not going to do your homework.
- They are very tired of doing things by themselves.
- She is from England.
- We bought a present for ourselves. This present is for us.
- Please ask them if they are going to school tomorrow.
- They said that their house is so big and beautiful, we must go see it.
- Their wedding will be next week.
- I am giving you this book, it is yours to keep.
- Don’t worry, you can go to the movie with us.

* We avoid using its and one’s as possessive pronouns except when we use them with own:
The river seemed so quiet as it had a life of its own.
One doesn’t like to spend too much time on one’s own.
