<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Zero Conditional</h2>

<p>The <strong>Zero Conditional</strong> is a conditional structure in English used to express <strong>general truths</strong>, <strong>scientific facts</strong>, and things that <strong>always happen</strong> as a result of a condition.</p>

<p>We use the Zero Conditional when the result is <strong>certain</strong> — if the condition is true, the result <em>always</em> follows. Both clauses use the <strong>Simple Present</strong>. The word <strong>when</strong> can replace <strong>if</strong> without changing the meaning.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quick Example</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If you heat ice, it <strong>melts</strong>.</li>

<li>If water reaches 100°C, it <strong>boils</strong>.</li>

<li>If it rains, the ground <strong>gets</strong> wet.</li>

<li>If you press this button, the light <strong>turns on</strong>.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Form</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>If-clause</th><th>Main clause (Result)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>If</strong> + Simple Present</td><td>Simple Present</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p><strong>Note:</strong> <strong>When</strong> can replace <strong>if</strong> in Zero Conditional sentences without changing the meaning: <em>When you heat ice, it melts.</em></p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Common Signal Words</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If</li>

<li>When</li>

<li>Unless</li>

<li>Every time</li>

<li>Whenever</li>

<li>As soon as</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use</h3>

<p><strong>The Zero Conditional is used to express:</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>General Truths and Scientific Facts</li>

<li>Habits and Routines</li>

<li>Instructions and Directions</li>
</ol>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. General Truths and Scientific Facts</h4>

<p>Use the Zero Conditional to talk about facts that are always true — in nature, science, or everyday life.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If you mix blue and yellow, you <strong>get</strong> green.</li>

<li>If the temperature drops below 0°C, water <strong>freezes</strong>.</li>

<li>If plants don&#8217;t get water, they <strong>die</strong>.</li>

<li>If you drop something, it <strong>falls</strong> to the ground.</li>

<li>If you divide any number by itself, you <strong>get</strong> one.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. Habits and Routines</h4>

<p>Use the Zero Conditional to talk about things that regularly happen under certain conditions.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I drink coffee at night, I <strong>can&#8217;t sleep</strong>.</li>

<li>If she studies every day, she <strong>passes</strong> her exams.</li>

<li>If they exercise regularly, they <strong>feel</strong> better.</li>

<li>If he works overtime, he <strong>gets</strong> paid more.</li>

<li>When I <strong>wake up</strong> early, I <strong>feel</strong> more productive.</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. Instructions and Directions</h4>

<p>Use the Zero Conditional to give clear instructions, recipes, or step-by-step directions.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If the error appears, <strong>restart</strong> the computer.</li>

<li>If you want to make pasta, <strong>boil</strong> water first.</li>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h3>

<p>The Zero Conditional is the most straightforward conditional in English because it expresses <strong>certainties</strong> — the result always follows from the condition. Remember that <strong>if</strong> and <strong>when</strong> are interchangeable in this structure, and both clauses always use the <strong>Simple Present</strong>.</p>

<p>Mastering the Zero Conditional is the foundation for understanding all other conditional forms. Once you understand that conditions lead to predictable results, the First, Second, and Third Conditionals become much easier to learn.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">First Conditional</h2>

<p>The <strong>First Conditional</strong> is used to talk about <strong>real and possible situations in the future</strong>. The speaker believes the condition is genuinely possible — it might actually happen.</p>

<p>We form the First Conditional with <strong>If + Simple Present</strong> in the if-clause and <strong>will + infinitive</strong> in the main clause. Other modal verbs such as <strong>can</strong>, <strong>may</strong>, and <strong>might</strong> can also be used in the main clause to express different degrees of certainty.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quick Example</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If it rains, I <strong>will take</strong> an umbrella.</li>

<li>If she studies hard, she <strong>will pass</strong> the exam.</li>

<li>If you don&#8217;t hurry, you <strong>will miss</strong> the bus.</li>

<li>If they arrive early, we <strong>will start</strong> the meeting.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Form</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>If-clause</th><th>Main clause (Result)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>If</strong> + Simple Present</td><td>will + infinitive</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p><strong>Note:</strong> The main clause can also use <strong>can</strong>, <strong>may</strong>, or <strong>might</strong> instead of <strong>will</strong>: <em>If it rains, we might stay home.</em></p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Common Signal Words</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If</li>

<li>Unless</li>

<li>As long as</li>

<li>Provided that</li>

<li>In case</li>

<li>When (future)</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use</h3>

<p><strong>The First Conditional is used to express:</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Real and Possible Future Situations</li>

<li>Warnings and Threats</li>

<li>Promises and Offers</li>
</ol>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. Real and Possible Future Situations</h4>

<p>Use the First Conditional to talk about future situations the speaker considers genuinely possible.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If the weather is nice, we <strong>will go</strong> to the beach.</li>

<li>If you study hard, you <strong>will get</strong> a good grade.</li>

<li>If she calls me, I <strong>will answer</strong>.</li>

<li>If they finish early, they <strong>will join</strong> us for dinner.</li>

<li>If I save enough money, I <strong>will travel</strong> to Japan.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. Warnings and Threats</h4>

<p>Use the First Conditional to warn someone about a possible negative consequence.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If you don&#8217;t wear a coat, you <strong>will get</strong> cold.</li>

<li>If he drives so fast, he <strong>will have</strong> an accident.</li>

<li>If you don&#8217;t pay the bill, they <strong>will cut off</strong> the electricity.</li>

<li>Unless you apologize, she <strong>won&#8217;t forgive</strong> you.</li>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h3>

<p>The First Conditional expresses <strong>real possibilities</strong> — situations the speaker genuinely thinks could happen. The key difference from the Zero Conditional is that the First Conditional talks about <strong>specific future situations</strong>, while the Zero Conditional expresses timeless facts.</p>

<p>Always remember: the if-clause uses the <strong>Simple Present</strong> (never &#8220;will&#8221;), while the main clause uses <strong>will + infinitive</strong>. A common mistake is to write <em>&#8220;If it will rain&#8230;&#8221;</em> — this is incorrect in English.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Second Conditional</h2>

<p>The <strong>Second Conditional</strong> is used to talk about <strong>hypothetical or imaginary situations</strong> in the present or future. The speaker believes the condition is <em>unlikely</em> or <em>impossible</em> — it is not expected to happen.</p>

<p>We form the Second Conditional with <strong>If + Simple Past</strong> in the if-clause and <strong>would + infinitive</strong> in the main clause. The verbs <strong>could</strong> and <strong>might</strong> can also replace <strong>would</strong> to express possibility rather than certainty.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quick Example</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I had more time, I <strong>would travel</strong> more.</li>

<li>If she spoke Spanish, she <strong>would apply</strong> for that job.</li>

<li>If I were you, I <strong>wouldn&#8217;t do</strong> that.</li>

<li>If we won the lottery, we <strong>would buy</strong> a house.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Form</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>If-clause</th><th>Main clause (Result)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>If</strong> + Simple Past</td><td>would + infinitive</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p><strong>Note:</strong> In formal English, <strong>were</strong> is used for all persons in the if-clause: <em>If I <strong>were</strong> rich&#8230; / If she <strong>were</strong> here&#8230;</em> In informal speech, <em>was</em> is also accepted for I/he/she/it.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Common Signal Words</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If</li>

<li>Unless</li>

<li>Imagine</li>

<li>Suppose</li>

<li>What if</li>

<li>Would</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use</h3>

<p><strong>The Second Conditional is used to express:</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Hypothetical and Imaginary Situations</li>

<li>Advice (If I were you&#8230;)</li>

<li>Wishes and Dreams</li>
</ol>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. Hypothetical and Imaginary Situations</h4>

<p>Use the Second Conditional to talk about situations that are imaginary, unlikely, or contrary to the current reality.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I lived in Paris, I <strong>would visit</strong> the Eiffel Tower every day.</li>

<li>If she had a car, she <strong>wouldn&#8217;t take</strong> the bus.</li>

<li>If it were summer, we <strong>would go</strong> swimming.</li>

<li>If they had more money, they <strong>would start</strong> a business.</li>

<li>If I spoke Chinese, I <strong>could work</strong> in Beijing.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. Advice (If I were you&#8230;)</h4>

<p>A very common use of the Second Conditional is to give advice using the expression <strong>If I were you&#8230;</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I were you, I <strong>would talk</strong> to the manager.</li>

<li>If I were you, I <strong>wouldn&#8217;t say</strong> that.</li>

<li>If I were in your position, I <strong>would ask</strong> for help.</li>

<li>If I were her, I <strong>would accept</strong> the offer.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. Wishes and Dreams</h4>

<p>Use the Second Conditional to talk about wishes and dreams — things you would like to be true but aren&#8217;t.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I had wings, I <strong>would fly</strong> around the world.</li>

<li>If she were a singer, she <strong>would perform</strong> at Carnegie Hall.</li>

<li>If I could choose any job, I <strong>would be</strong> an astronaut.</li>

<li>If we had a bigger house, we <strong>would have</strong> a swimming pool.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h3>

<p>The Second Conditional allows you to talk about <strong>imaginary realities</strong> — things that are not true now but could be. The key distinction from the First Conditional is that the Second Conditional expresses situations the speaker considers <strong>unlikely or impossible</strong>, while the First Conditional expresses <strong>real possibilities</strong>.</p>

<p>A useful tip: if you can replace <em>if</em> with <em>imagine that</em> and the sentence still makes sense, you are likely using the Second Conditional correctly. Remember that <strong>were</strong> (not <em>was</em>) is preferred in formal English for all persons in the if-clause.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Third Conditional</h2>

<p>The <strong>Third Conditional</strong> is used to talk about <strong>hypothetical situations in the past</strong> — things that did not happen and their imaginary results. It is the conditional of regret, criticism, and missed opportunities.</p>

<p>We form the Third Conditional with <strong>If + Past Perfect</strong> in the if-clause and <strong>would have + past participle</strong> in the main clause. <strong>Could have</strong> and <strong>might have</strong> can also replace <strong>would have</strong> to express different levels of certainty.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quick Example</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I had studied harder, I <strong>would have passed</strong> the exam.</li>

<li>If she had left earlier, she <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have missed</strong> the train.</li>

<li>If he had told me the truth, I <strong>would have helped</strong> him.</li>

<li>If they had saved more money, they <strong>could have bought</strong> a house.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Form</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>If-clause</th><th>Main clause (Result)</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>If</strong> + Past Perfect</td><td>would have + past participle</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p><strong>Note:</strong> <strong>Could have</strong> and <strong>might have</strong> can replace <strong>would have</strong>: <em>If she had studied, she <strong>might have passed</strong>.</em> The contraction <strong>would&#8217;ve</strong> is very common in spoken English.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Common Signal Words</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If only</li>

<li>I wish</li>

<li>If</li>

<li>Would have</li>

<li>Could have</li>

<li>Might have</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use</h3>

<p><strong>The Third Conditional is used to express:</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Hypothetical Past Situations</li>

<li>Regrets</li>

<li>Criticism and Blame</li>
</ol>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. Hypothetical Past Situations</h4>

<p>Use the Third Conditional to imagine how things could have been different if the past had been different.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I had known you were in town, I <strong>would have called</strong> you.</li>

<li>If she had taken the job, she <strong>would have moved</strong> to New York.</li>

<li>If they had worked harder, they <strong>would have won</strong> the competition.</li>

<li>If we had left on time, we <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have been</strong> late.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. Regrets</h4>

<p>The Third Conditional is often used to express regret about past actions or decisions.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I had studied medicine, I <strong>would have become</strong> a doctor.</li>

<li>If I hadn&#8217;t wasted so much time, I <strong>would have finished</strong> earlier.</li>

<li>If only I had listened to my parents, everything <strong>would have been</strong> different.</li>

<li>If she had saved her work, she <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have lost</strong> it.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. Criticism and Blame</h4>

<p>The Third Conditional can be used to criticize someone&#8217;s past actions or point out what they should have done differently.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If you had read the instructions, you <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have broken</strong> it.</li>

<li>If he had been more careful, he <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have had</strong> the accident.</li>

<li>If she had checked her email, she <strong>would have known</strong> about the meeting.</li>

<li>If they had planned better, the project <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have failed</strong>.</li>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h3>

<p>The Third Conditional is the conditional of <strong>the past that never happened</strong>. It is used to imagine alternative outcomes for situations that are already over. The condition and the result are both <strong>unreal</strong> — we know the past cannot be changed.</p>

<p>This conditional is especially useful for talking about <strong>regrets</strong> and <strong>learning from mistakes</strong>. Pay attention to the double past structure: <strong>Past Perfect</strong> in the if-clause and <strong>would have + past participle</strong> in the main clause — both forms together signal a purely imaginary past.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mixed Conditionals</h2>

<p><strong>Mixed Conditionals</strong> are conditional sentences where the <strong>if-clause</strong> and the <strong>main clause</strong> refer to <strong>different time periods</strong>. They combine structures from the Second and Third Conditionals to express relationships between past and present.</p>

<p>There are two main types of Mixed Conditionals. <strong>Type 1</strong> has a past condition with a present result. <strong>Type 2</strong> has a present condition with a past result. Both types express situations that are <strong>contrary to reality</strong>.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quick Example</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Type 1 —</strong> If I had studied medicine, I <strong>would be</strong> a doctor now.</li>

<li><strong>Type 1 —</strong> If she had taken that job, she <strong>would be</strong> living in New York.</li>

<li><strong>Type 2 —</strong> If I were taller, I <strong>would have played</strong> basketball professionally.</li>

<li><strong>Type 2 —</strong> If she were more careful, she <strong>wouldn&#8217;t have made</strong> that mistake.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Form</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Type</th><th>If-clause</th><th>Main clause (Result)</th><th>Time relationship</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Type 1</strong></td><td>If + Past Perfect</td><td>would + infinitive</td><td>Past condition → Present result</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Type 2</strong></td><td>If + Simple Past</td><td>would have + past participle</td><td>Present condition → Past result</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Common Signal Words</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If</li>

<li>Now / today / still (in the result clause — signals present)</li>

<li>Would (present result)</li>

<li>Would have (past result)</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use</h3>

<p><strong>Mixed Conditionals are used to express:</strong></p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Type 1 — Past Condition with Present Result</li>

<li>Type 2 — Present Condition with Past Result</li>
</ol>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. Type 1 — Past Condition with Present Result</h4>

<p>Use Type 1 when you imagine a <strong>different past</strong> and describe how it would affect the <strong>present situation</strong>. The if-clause uses the <strong>Past Perfect</strong>; the main clause uses <strong>would + infinitive</strong>.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>If I had chosen a different career, I <strong>would be</strong> much happier now.</li>

<li>If she hadn&#8217;t moved abroad, she <strong>would still be living</strong> near her family.</li>

<li>If he had followed his passion, he <strong>would be</strong> an artist today.</li>

<li>If they had invested wisely, they <strong>would be</strong> millionaires by now.</li>

<li>If I had learned to drive, I <strong>wouldn&#8217;t need</strong> to take the bus every day.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. Type 2 — Present Condition with Past Result</h4>

<p>Use Type 2 when a <strong>present reality</strong> is imagined as different and you describe how that would have affected a <strong>past situation</strong>. The if-clause uses the <strong>Simple Past</strong> (or <em>were</em>); the main clause uses <strong>would have + past participle</strong>.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h3>

<p>Mixed Conditionals allow you to make precise connections between <strong>past and present</strong> in a way that pure Second or Third Conditionals cannot. They reflect real-life thinking: a past decision shapes who we are today, and who we are today shapes what happened in the past.</p>

<p>The key to identifying which type to use is simple: look at <strong>when the result happens</strong>. If the result is in the <strong>present</strong>, use Type 1 (Past Perfect → would + infinitive). If the result is in the <strong>past</strong>, use Type 2 (Simple Past/were → would have + past participle).</p>
